Cleaning your HRV

HRV

To maintain optimal performance of your HRV, it is recommended to perform biannual cleaning in the spring and fall. Follow these steps for effective maintenance:

  1. Turn off and unplug the HRV before starting the cleaning process.

  2. Open the HRV unit and thoroughly clean its interior components.

  3. Remove and clean or replace the filters in the HRV.

  4. Check if your HRV is equipped with a condensate drain, typically a pipe or plastic tube at the bottom. Pour approximately two liters of warm, clean water into each drain pan inside the HRV to ensure unobstructed flow.

  5. Move to the exterior of your house where the intake and exhaust vents are located. Clean the screens on these vents, paying extra attention to the intake vent, which is often prone to blockages from insects and debris.

  6. Inspect and vacuum out the ducts connected to the vents.

  7. Ensure that the vents are free from snow or ice buildup, especially during winter.

By keeping these vents clear, you not only promote healthy indoor air for your family but also enhance the efficiency of your air exchanger. Regular maintenance is essential for the optimal functioning of your HRV system.
