Unusual Home Inspection Find

Canadian money

Home inspectors encounter unusual situations, and for Scott Davis, owner of Canadian Residential Inspection Services in Halifax, a recent inspection revealed an unforgettable discovery – a decades-old stash of $20 bills totaling around $10,000.

Davis, along with a realtor, was inspecting an older residence on Barrington Street on behalf of a buyer.

While searching for attic access, Davis lifted a ceiling tile and stumbled upon a bag from a discount store. Intrigued, he peered inside to find a stash of old $20 bills, likely hidden there before the introduction of the new twenties. The money, estimated to have been sitting there since the ’80s, formed a stack approximately 12 centimeters thick.

Although the bag was labeled $17,000, a subsequent count revealed it contained around $10,000. Uncertain about the appropriate course of action, Davis, with four years of inspection experience, found himself in uncharted territory.

As the buyer had already left the property during the inspection, Davis and the realtor, feeling the police were best equipped to determine the rightful recipient, turned the cash over to the authorities. Subsequently, family members involved in the estate sale were contacted, and the money was returned to them. Out of respect for the privacy of those involved, Davis opted not to disclose the location.

Reflecting on the incident, Davis, who captured a photo of the find, expressed satisfaction with having a remarkable story stemming from the unexpected discovery.
